Excited to read some reviews by players here. I promised myself I wouldn't get this with Hearts of Iron 4 right around the corner but...

I'm just sort of learning the basics on this. How fast do you normally expand in the beginning? I'm seeing a bunch of different systems occupied by crystal fleets and etc, each of which are 3 to 5 times my own power rating. I'm afraid that if the local, non-sentient beings in my neighbourhood can kick my arse in after a few game years that if I run into someone else puttering around the galaxy I'll be in real trouble.

There's a lot to know I suppose, just like any Paradox game. I think I've mistakenly thought there would be less to know in this one... What are the essential tips and what are the essential vids to watch to not suck?

Really hard to say which is better, given how... fleet combat is overall chaotic and poorly explained.
